On a quiet, overcast afternoon on July 8, 2017, I was stepping onto the wooden deck of my home porch in the Pine Valley Estates, located in Orchard Hills just outside of Apollo, Pennsylvania.

A Masterclass in Backyard Camouflage

I almost missed the entire encounter. Nestled deeply against a lush backdrop of vibrant green plants was a tiny baby praying mentis, measuring a mere two inches in length. Its camouflage was absolutely flawless, and it would have easily gone completely unnoticed if not for a single, subtle movement that caught the corner of my eye. The sudden twitch prompted me to stop and look closer. Realizing the rare nature of the moment, I raced back inside the house, grabbed my Nikon D5100 camera, and hurried  back out to the porch deck before the tiny insect could slip away into the dense foliage.

To ensure the small subject wouldn’t get visually swallowed by the dense greenery, I carefully adjusted my position. I aligned the camera lens so the nymph was resting dead center in the frame. Consequently, this centralized composition allows the viewer to instantly identify the insect amidst the chaotic, intertwining paths of the surrounding leaves.

The Fine Details of a Tiny Subject

The soft, diffused light from the overcast sky acted as a giant, natural softbox, eliminating harsh shadows and letting the natural color pattern of the young predator shine. The insect displayed a beautiful, deep brown color along its back, running the full length of its body, paired with a vibrant streak of green running right down its side. Through the lens, this tiny hunter stood out with immense clarity and structure.
